3)         Report from Chair

Dr. Rockhold relayed to the members of the committee that the Office of Faculty Development will host a series of faculty development seminars at Noon on the last Wednesday of each month in room R153 (lower amphitheater). On Jan. 30, Dr. John Pelley, associate professor of cell biology and biochemistry at the Texas Tech University School of Medicine and author of Success Types for Medical Students, will present "Teaching to Transform the Brain." Lunch will be served to the first 150 participants. The seminars will continue on Feb. 27, Dr. Thomas C. Meredith, commissioner of higher education for the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL), will present "The Other Side of Medicine;" and on March 26, Tom Wiggers, UMC associate professor of clinical laboratory science, will present "An Objective Method for the Evaluation and Measurement of Student Affective Domain." All Medical Center faculty, staff and students are invited to the presentations.

Dr. Rockhold reported that AES IEP was due 1-25-08.  There were two objectives posted, and three Means of Unit Assessment & Criteria for Success need to be addressed for the AES report.  In all cases, using a partially standardized (i.e., not all questions are identical for every session being evaluated), Likert scaled questionnaire, a majority of participants will report that they are "Satisfied" or "Very satisfied" with the quality of the monthly presentations and on no individual question will more than 25% of respondants indicate "Very dissatisfied". At least one graduate of the UMMC Leadership Development Program will achieve a significant increase in leadership responsibilities within a 24 month period following selection into the program and at least one aspect of that increase will be within the UMMC campus.  Dr. Rockhold reported that of 9 members of the previous Leadership Development Program class, 6 members responded: 2 had no new roles, and 4 had a significant increase in responsibilities.

After further explanation of the AES units, there was a formal approval made by the members.

Regarding Faculty Scholarship Exchange Awards, March 31, 2008 is the deadline for 2008-2009 applications. The office is currently reviewing the status of existing funded projects, and one new Mini-sabbatical application has been awarded.

Dr. Rockhold presented the group with some documents containing possible mission statements for the UMMC. The group discussed the options and bullet points that followed the statement. All of the opinions and suggestions of our committee members will be presented to Dr. Turner and she will in turn present those to the group overseeing the creation of the statement.

Again, requests for TRIAD articles will be a standing item on the committee agenda. Any topic ideas or suggestions for articles or full written (250 word) articles are appreciated for the bi-monthly newsletter.

4)         Sub-Committee Reports

There was some discussion about New Faculty Orientation. There is a campus wide committee in place that is still deliberating on the issues.
