Report from Chair
Dr. Rockhold discussed the state of the Office of Faculty Development in the cusp of the new academic year and presented the charge and list of new members.
Dr. Rockhold proposed a new format for the Faculty Development Committee meetings. Meeting semi-annually (3 a year) seems sufficient for effectiveness of this committee: September 30, 2008; January 30, 2009; and May 29, 2009. The committee approved. There will be continued electronic communication with members throughout the year to supplement.
The members reviewed the charge of the committee. This committee started out as strictly a school of Medicine committee and expanded membership to all five schools. Schools/departments already have some Faculty Development committees as support, and this committee serves as an umbrella coordination. It also creates additional opportunities to enhance skills and continuous improvement.
Our initiatives for this academic year will be 1) new faculty orientation and 2) development of the Faculty Development webpage.
The Faculty Development Website sub-committee will now be led by Dr. Lushbaugh. A site map is being developed. This project will require man hours from HR and DIS.
Over the past three to four months the institution has looked at new methods for orienting new employees; however there are still no solid methods that are faculty specific. The schools/departments are currently providing some form of orientation to new faculty members.
Dr. Rockhold is working the Deans and HR to create a uniquely tailored welcome packet. He also suggested/ asked for committee member volunteers to commit to meeting each new hire with in 30 days of their arrival. The Office of Faculty Development would put these packets together and help schedule meetings. Other ideas we discussed, such as a "meet and greet" breakfast to distribute packets monthly and various committee members taking new faculty to the Faculty Dining Room for lunch.
Dr. Rockhold thanked the committee for serving and appreciates the time and support provided by the committee members.
