1) Call to Order by Dr. Rockhold
2) Review of minutes from August 27, 2007
Action: Reviewed and approved w/ minor change
3) Report from Chair
Dr. Rockhold commended Angie on all of her work regularly updating the Faculty Development Website.
The Leadership Development Program roster was appended with the agenda. A roster for the Leadership Development Program was provided by Dr. Rockhold. The hired consulting firm performed a needs assessment, presented at a two day retreat and will do two follow-up sessions in October and November. The schedule for 2007-2008 is firm; however titles for the second half of the sessions are being finalized.
There was much discussion about New Faculty Orientation. It is agreed that faculty should go through some form of orientation to be aware of the basics; however this could be realistically covered in ˝ of a day as strictly Faculty Orientation. Dr. Rockhold highlighted that all issues involving legality and liability should be reviewed online and a certificate (much like the compliance process) should be awarded and put in the faculty members' personnel files. It is obvious that the whole orientation could be completed online, but some feel there is something to be said for / an advantage to being around peers. Interaction is a plus, however several hours of lecture and video seems unnecessary. It was questioned how many faculty members are oriented, and how often? The number of new faculty is low, making others feel that a more "at your convenience" style orientation would be adequate. It was suggested that a survey be done questioning the "top 5 things faculty should learn in orientation." Dr. Rockhold noted the valuable input from the committee and stated that there needs to be a way to verify participation in Faculty Orientation and that it should have a personal touch. HR generates a list of new faculty and this office sends out welcome letters to new faculty on a monthly basis.
Requests for TRIAD articles will be a standing item on the committee agenda. Any topic ideas or suggestions for articles or full written (250 word) articles are appreciated.
Dr. Rockhold reminded the committee that monthly Faculty Development Noon Seminars will begin on campus on in January. Dr. John Pelley, from Texas Tech, is the likely keynote speaker for the first session. There will be 4 to 5 monthly sessions, a pause for the summer, and will pick back up at the beginning of the school year.
Dr. Olson has ideas about the proposal for a Teaching and Learning center at UMMC. This center will be generously funded for Faculty Development. The majority of teaching/learning centers are geared towards faculty. These centers help faculty learn about teaching.
Dr. Waltman had previously reported on "Online Classroom"- an online newsletter, provides support and training. Members agreed that Ada should subscribe to this for the whole campus.
4) Sub-Committee Reports
o Sub-committees will present an update at a later meeting- as most key players in these sub-committees were absent
5) New Business from floor
6) Adjournment
